Chapter Seventeen

Lara and Cal watched the medical team help Aya into the van with Piper fussing over her the whole way. Molly jumped in after them and gave Lara a pointed look and a little wave. As they drove away, the silence of the woods surrounded them.

“Should we clean this stuff up?” Lara asked, looking at the ropes and abandoned harnesses.

“I’ve got it.” Cal said, moving around to the back of his truck and throwing a bottle of water to Lara. “You drink this.”

Lara downed the water and splashed a few of the remaining drops on her hands and face as Cal quickly gathered everything up and threw it in the back of the truck. Lara watched as he grabbed a second bottle of water, took a big drink, and, to her delight, poured the rest over his head, wiping his hands over his hair and down his face. Her eyes roamed from his closed eyes down to the wet t-shirt that was clinging to his chest.

“What?” he asked when he opened his eyes and saw her staring.

“We’re quite the pair.” She looked down at her sports bra and then over to his wet shirt.

In one quick motion, he pulled his shirt over his head and tossed it in the back of the truck. Lara’s eyes grew as she tried not to gasp. She knew his arms were muscular, but did he have an eight pack? She turned away, trying not to be too affected by what she was certain was the best male body she’d ever seen. “So, she said, moving her toe back and forth in the dirt, “what’s next?”

“I think we’ve had enough hiking for the day, don’t you?” he asked/.

“Probably,” Lara agreed.

“Hop in, I have a secret spot I want to show you.”

“Secret, huh? I bet you know all of the secret spots in these woods.”

“That I do,” Cal grinned. “And I don’t share them with just anyone.”

Lara jumped into the passenger side of the truck, feeling weird about putting the seat belt over her exposed stomach.

“How did you know what to do with Piper?” she asked as Cal drove them down the path and to a part of the forest that she hadn’t seen before.

“I’ve taken a lot of emergency training classes. She was pretty panicked. I knew she wouldn’t be any help with Aya, but we needed to keep her safe, too.”

“Did she really need to hug that rock for our safety?” Lara asked.

Cal tapped the steering wheel. “Promise you won’t tell her?”

“Promise.”

“She was doing us no favors,” he laughed.

Lara grinned at his deep laughter.

“But at the same time, keeping her safe and out of the way was helpful, right?” he said.

“Oh, totally. It was a stroke of genius.”

“Speaking of genius, what made you think of your tank top to help with the splint?” Cal glanced over, reminding Lara that she was wearing just a sports bra and he was shirtless.

“They didn’t teach you that in your emergency classes?” she asked.

“Not exactly.”

“Well, I watch a lot of medical shows,” Lara shrugged.
